Is Your Golf Swing Takeaway Wide Enough?


The golf takeaway is one of the most practiced elements of the golf swing. It is the part that involves using your shoulders as you are swinging back. Although, some may understand the concept, others may not grasp the idea on how wide the golf swing takeaway should be. Another thing to consider, is the length of your club. Most clubs vary in length, each of them differ a 1/2 inch from one another. One way to look at it and give a better example, is that a 9 iron has a length that is a 1/2 inch shorter than a 8 iron and then an 8 iron is a half inch shorter than a 7 iron, and it continue this way down the line.

When you want to determine how wide the takeaway golf swing is, you should take into account the distance of your hands in relation to your body. This has to do with the length of the clubs, as discussed. So you would want to set up the ball as if you were normally golfing and then place the club next to it on the ground behind it.

Take your right hand off the club, but don’t move it. Make a fist with the right hand and extend the thumb, while placing it against the right thigh. Move as close as you need to the club, until the tip of the thumb, meets the butt of the handle. Now, you are ready to put you’re hand on the club and should have more of an idea in relation to where you where your hands distance should be in accordance to your body.

As for your feet, you do not want to keep both of your legs too far apart. This does not give you more power, but makes it harder for you to shift your weight into the swing. When you properly distance your feet apart, its easier for you to transfer your weight and gives your hips more movement.

Commonly, your stance should only go as far as the distance between both your shoulders. You don’t want the feet too close together, since that can cause you to lose balance, however in case you do have proper distance in your feet and your having difficulty with keeping balance then you are swinging your club too hard.

The worst thing to do is change your stance in regards to your swinging. It is better to tone down on the way you are hitting, then widening the distance of your feet. Keep in mind, the length of the iron has to do with the stance and the shoulder length is a guide and not 100% accurate. The best thing to do is practice different stances, which will give you the best clue as to what stance is right for you.

When getting into position for the golf swing takeaway, your going to want to keep both the right and left forearms straight, while relaxed and pointing down. When you look at both of your arms it should look sort of like a triangle, which should remain as you move to your right.

At no point do you want to move the wrist or hands. Your main concentration should be on keeping the triangle exactly the way it was when you started. As your arms reach the level of your waist, the shoulders should start to work in the completion in the movement.

As for how wide the golf swing takeaway is, it depends on your perfection of the skill. Practice these drills and eventually you should have a nice wide takeaway. As for measurements, who’s counting, but form means everything.
